Iluvwigs Find My Size and Color; Care and Maintenance Tips
1. How do I know what size to choose?
You want to feel comfortable in your wig, so measure your head for the best fit:
Using a tape measure, follow your hairline just above your ears. This measurement, the circumference or distance around your head, is the number you need to know.
If your circumference is under 17 1/2”, you need an ultra-petite or child’s size wig. If your circumference is 17 ½” –19 ½”, you need a petite wig. If your circumference is 19 ½”-21 ½”, you need an average size. Over 21 ½” means a large capsize. These are general sizes that may vary from one manufacturer to the next. When in doubt, order the next size up.
2. What if my wig doesn’t fit?
Some makers offer the same style in more than one cap size. In this case, an exchange is a snap. More often than not, however if you need a different cap size, the style may have to change as well.
3. What if my wig is too large?
Most wigs are made with adjustment straps at the nape of the neck. Adjust these as needed until you find the most comfortable position. If you still need it smaller, you can alter it with needle and thread, or send it to our seamstress for alteration. Email us your request to info@iluvwigs.com or call our toll free number: 1-800-966-4078, and we will quote you a price.
4. What if my wig is too small?
You can make it larger by stretching it over a canvas block and securing it with t-pins. Or, email us your request to info@iluvwigs.com or call our toll free number 1-800-966-4078 and we will quote you a price for our seamstress to stretch it.
5. How do I choose the right color?
Try to choose a color that is the same shade or a shade lighter than your own hair color. When in doubt, choose the lighter shade to avoid an artificial look. To assist in choosing the right color, we display the manufacturers’ color charts if available. But, because computer monitors may vary, the actual wig color may not appear the same as on your screen.
6. Can I send my hair sample for you to match?
Yes. Cut a swatch of your hair about ½ inch wide by 1-2 inches (or longer). Make sure there is enough quantity of hair to actually see the shade. If your hair consists of more than one shade, send in as large a swatch as possible, preferably from different sections of your head.
Tape each ½” swatch separately onto a white piece of paper, and mail it along with a note including your name, address, telephone, and email address. It would also be very helpful if you include the brand and the style name you are interested in. One comment about highlights and frosts: most manufacturers blend two, three, or more colors together to yield the most authentic hair shades. Therefore, an exact match may not be possible, but we will make every effort to come as close as possible to your hair color. Mail your hair sample to:

7. How do I care for my synthetic wig?
Only use products specially made for synthetic hair. This will prolong the life of your hairpiece and help retain its natural sheen. We have a great collection of accessories for this purpose.
8. How do I wash and dry my synthetic wig?
First, brush the wig with a wire brush in the same direction as the setting to detangle and remove excess dirt and spray. Do not brush curly hair, use only pic or fingers to detangle. Fill a wash basin with cool to lukewarm water and a small amount of wig shampoo. Dip the wig in and out of this solution, paying careful attention not to tangle the hair while washing. Pat the shampoo thoroughly into the hair with fingers. Do not wring. Don’t forget to do the same to the cap or inside of the wig. Empty the basin and rinse the remaining shampoo out of the wig with running water flowing in the same direction as the hair (start at the roots and let the water run to the ends).
Shampoo again if necessary. Follow the same steps using the wig conditioner. After conditioning, lightly arrange the fibers into place and let air dry (overnight works well for most). Do not place on head form while wet, as this may stretch the cap. We like to hang the wig on a hanger, or on shower head or faucet to drip-dry.
9. How do I style my synthetic wig?
Synthetic hair has memory. That means the curl or setting comes back even after it has been wet. Do not use curling irons, blow-dryers, electric curlers or any other form of heating element to style your wig. Keep your wig away from a hot oven, barbeque, stove or other sources of heat, as the synthetic fiber will melt, frizz, or otherwise become damaged.
10. How often should I wash it?
Most people get 5-10 wearings between washings. There are exceptions, but generally if you wear your wig every day, you want to shampoo and condition it about once every week to two weeks. In between washings, you can use leave-in conditioners (available from our accessories page) to keep your hairpiece in tip-top shape.
11. What if my wig appears faded, frizzy, or damaged?
Contrary to what most people think, damaged wig fiber may be repaired. Email us for a price quote to repair your wig.
12. What is the difference between synthetic and human hair wigs?
Synthetic hair retains its curl even after it had been wet or shampooed. Synthetic hair color may last longer than human hair wigs. Synthetic fiber cannot be dyed. Human hair wigs can be blow-dried, set with electric rollers or curling iron. Human hair wigs can be colored (you can deposit color but not lift it). For best results, take your human hair wigs to an expert. |
